তখন বাংলাদেশ পাকিস্তানের অংশ ছিল। সরকার চেয়েছিল সবাই উর্দুতে কথা বলুক। স্কুলেও একমাত্র উর্দুতে শিক্ষা প্রদান করা হোক, বাংলা নয়। এই সিদ্ধান্ত- শিক্ষক, ছাত্র-ছাত্রী এবং কর্মীদের বিচলিত করলো, কারণ শিক্ষকরা এটা জানেন যে বাচ্চারা তাদের প্রথম ভাষাতেই ভালো শেখে। দুঃখজনকভাবে, পুলিশ তাদের উপর গুলি চালায়, এবং কয়েকজন মারা যায়।
Bangladesh was part of Pakistan in 1952. The government wanted everyone to speak Urdu. School teachers must teach only in Urdu, not Bengali. The decision upset teachers, students, and staff, as teachers know children learn best in their first language. Tragically, the police opened fire on them, and several died.
এই ঘটনা পর বাংলা ভাষার প্রতি আমাদের ভালবাসা আরো গাঢ় হয়। আমরা এমন একটি দেশ চেয়েছিলাম যেখানে সবাই সমান, ভাষা এবং ধর্ম নির্বিশেষে। ভাষা বৈচিত্র রক্ষার এই আন্দোলন বাংলাদেশের স্বাধীনতার ভিত্তি স্থাপন করে।
After this incident, our love for the Bengali language became more intense. We wanted a country where everyone is equal, irrespective of language and religion. The movement to protect linguistic diversity laid the foundation for the independence of Bangladesh.
