Myth in special education

Some important facts to know as parents of special children. I am a spec ed teacher in NYC. Once a fact is now a myth. Demographics have changed rapidly and in many more families, both parents work outside of the home. The number of single families increased. Single parents increased dramatically from 14% in 1960 to 24% in 2011.  80% of the military are married with children (Hallahan et, al. 2014). According to research, mothers face a series of reactions, shock, denial, sadness, fear, and anger before adopting a child with a disability. The stress becomes more intense when the mother becomes a soldier in the family. Once upon a time, when a typical family in the United States had two parents while only the father working outside the home. But today? The fact is that father is not present, and the mother has two or more jobs. Myth is the fact in the past. It sounds like an exaggerated truth now. The fact is- there was a time, a typical family in the United States had two parents while only the father working outside the home. A higher prevalence of disability exists in single-parent families and families in poverty. Today’s parents are living under plenty of distress because of uncertainties of issues. Increasing stress finds parents difficult to devote time and energy to working on behalf of their children. Because of the pressure to earn living regardless of economic conditions, parents have fewer resources to draw on to provide comfort to their children. According to the research from the UNICEF office in 2013, the United States has been the second-highest in the child poverty rate among the 35 industrialized countries. The ratio is one in five (1:5) children live in poverty in the USA. One to three in the Latino community and one to two in the black community children. 

Demography changes because of that adaptability have changed. Adaptability means convenience and a balance between work and home schedules. For example, in the case of a child taking to a scheduled occupational therapy session, the father can take care of other kids when the mother can take the child to the therapy session vice versa. The fact is now that father is not present, and the mother has two or more jobs. Single-parent family. The research found that a higher prevalence of disability exists in single-parent families and families in poverty. The military is the largest employer of single parents in the United States and an increasing number of low-income women are looking at the military for career opportunities. Children are seeking attention more than ever.
